In the School of Wellbeing program the School with Class Foundation supports educators in their efforts to strengthen the mental health of students. We are committed to taming topics related to mood disorders in the school environment.
The goal of the program is to raise awareness of the role of schools in the topic and support school staff in strengthening the mental health of students, as well as the entire school community.
The School of Wellbeing - evaluation report
The evaluation report of the School of Wellbeing determines the usefulness and comprehensibility of the materials created under the program, as well as its effectiveness. There were also captured opportunities and challenges of introducing the following topics in the area of child and adolescent well-being into Polish schools:
- depression and mood disorders
- peer violence
- crisis intervention
- integration of the class
- digital well-being
- self-esteem
The materials on the above-mentioned six topics consisted of the following modules:
- knowledge – basic, important introductory information on a given topic
- strategies – suggestions for changes to be implemented throughout the school
- practices – a set of activities to use when working with the class
The survey was conducted in April-June 2023. In the report, we gave voice to the teachers themselves – the participants of the School of Wellbeing. 83 people completed an online survey and/or participated in a focus group survey (6 group interviews). The largest number of respondents were elementary school teachers. Many of them were also class tutors. The second largest group was school pedagogues/psychologists.
Teachers noted that the topic of well-being is important at school. They perceive:
- the need to take care of mental health and integration of classes after the pandemic,
- the high pressure on students to achieve results, their overload,
- the need to work with a culturally diverse classes,
- the need to emphasize the implementation of prevention programs in schools.
- 99% of people familiarized themselves with the materials in the “knowledge” section
- 95% of people familiarized themselves with the materials of the “practices” section
- 78% of people have familiarized themselves with the materials from the “strategies” section
- 95% of participants have used at least one material of the School of Wellbeing program in their work with the classroom
- 93.98% – have new ideas for taking care of well-being in school thanks to the materials
- 90.36% – want to use some of the materials in the 2023/2024 school year
- 78% – shared at least one material from the strategy module with the pedagogical council or school management
Some topics related to well-being were difficult for school staff to address because of fear of not knowing enough about the topic or accidentally hurting students. These included:
– depression and mood disorders,
– crisis intervention.
Teachers were most likely to use materials on:
– self-esteem and
– class integration.
Summary
- The School of Well-being program supports the creation and implementation of prevention programs in schools and educational work during lessons.
- It helps build peer relationships and also relationships between school staff and students.
- The introduction of well-being topics into schools is perceived positively by the teachers.
- Some topics are easier for teachers or educators (e.g., self-esteem or classroom integration), while others raise concerns (e.g., crisis intervention or depression and mood disorders).
- Many of the teachers reached out primarily for materials that they can use immediately in their work with the classroom. Expanding their knowledge or subjecting themselves to personal reflection on well-being was not the main motivation for participating in the program.
- The School of Wellbeing encourages teachers to reflect on what kind of school we/they want – one focused on grades, exam results and rankings or one focused on the relationships and well-being of all those who learn and work there.
